Latest Airship Developments:
Today we want to share some details about the Stratobus(TM) airship designed by the THALES group to perform civilian and defense missions in areas such as telecommunications, surveillance, observation and navigation. Stratobus(TM) is an autonomous stratospheric airship 140 meters long, operating at an altitude of 20 kilometers. It encompasses a non-rigid envelope whose shape is maintained by pressurized helium. The demonstration flight of this stratospheric balloon was carried out recently on September 11, 2021 at Kiruna, Sweden. The flight entailing regulated collapsing of the envelope at an altitude of 20 km followed by triggering the airship’s controlled descent to the ground was carried out to test the pertinent emergency recovery system. The success of tis flight has paved the way for future reduced scale Stratobus demonstrators.
